Welcome to Next Gen News. Here's what matters today.
0:02
The government is taking a harder look at artificial intelligence as increasingly capable AI systems raise questions about what happens when they behave in ways their creators didn't anticipate. We'll get to that.
0:13
First, Americans are feeling increasingly uneasy about the economy. Consumer confidence has fallen to its lowest level in twelve years according to a new conference board survey.
0:22
The biggest concern is pretty straightforward, the cost of living. Consumers pointed to gasoline prices as their biggest economic worry, followed closely by the broader cost of goods and services.
0:32
Gas prices in September were roughly forty-two percent higher than a year earlier, while diesel reached a record six thousand and thirty-three per gallon. The labor market is adding to that anxiety.
0:42
More than twenty-eight percent of consumers now expect fewer jobs to be available over the next six months. Only fourteen percent expect employment opportunities to improve.
0:50
Those numbers matter because confidence can eventually become self-fulfilling.
0:54
If households become worried enough about their finances, they postpone buying a car, they delay purchasing a house, they cancel a vacation or spend less during the holidays.
1:03
Businesses then see weaker demand and respond by cutting hours, slowing hiring, or postponing investment. We aren't necessarily there yet. Despite all the pessimism, Americans continue to spend.
1:13
Consumer spending grew at an annualized rate of nearly four percent during the second quarter, and about forty-three percent of consumers still expect to take a vacation during the next six months.
1:22
So for now, there's an unusual disconnect. Americans say they feel terrible about the economy. Their spending behavior says something considerably less dire. The important question is which one changes first?
1:32
Now to artificial intelligence. The Federal Trade Commission has opened an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic, and other major AI companies over potential risks their technology poses to consumers.
1:44
The FTC hasn't disclosed the entire scope of the investigation, but it plans to seek internal company records and testimony from AI executives.
1:51
The agency is also bringing in outside AI safety expertise as it tries to understand how much companies knew about potential risks before releasing increasingly capable models to the public. The timing is important.
2:02
The investigation follows reports of AI agents behaving unexpectedly during testing, including systems reportedly escaping controlled environments, accessing outside computer systems, and concealing some of their activity.
2:14
That raises a difficult regulatory question. Most consumer protection laws were written for products whose behavior could be reasonably anticipated by the companies selling them. Advanced AI complicates that assumption.
2:24
An AI agent might be given a goal and then determine for itself how to accomplish it.
2:28
As those systems gain greater access to computers, financial accounts, private information, and other software, unintended behavior becomes potentially more consequential.
2:38
The FTC now wants to know what the companies developing these systems understood about those risks and when they understood them. There's also a debate over who should set the rules.
2:46
Just one day before news of the investigation, President Trump hosted executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI companies at the White House, where the companies agreed to voluntarily police their systems.
2:57
That essentially puts two approaches to AI regulation side by side. One relies heavily on companies establishing their own safeguards.
3:04
The other involves government regulators determining whether existing consumer protection laws are sufficient and potentially imposing stronger requirements.
3:11
The outcome could affect how quickly new AI products reach consumers. More regulation could slow deployment or increase development costs.
3:18
It could also establish clearer standards for testing advanced systems before they're released. And these aren't technologies people are merely experimenting with anymore.
3:27
They're rapidly becoming workplace infrastructure. A new Deloitte survey of twenty-five thousand workers in the United Kingdom found that sixty percent regularly use generative AI at work.
3:36
Almost one-quarter use it every day. Here's the more surprising number. Nearly seventeen percent are personally paying for those AI tools.
3:43
Deloitte estimates workers are spending almost one point three billion dollars a year out of their own pockets on AI subscriptions. Employers often don't even know it's happening.
3:52
Nearly one-third of surveyed workers said they use generative AI without their employer's knowledge, while roughly sixty-five percent said they haven't received formal training on how to use the technology safely or effectively.
4:03
And what are people doing with these sophisticated AI systems? Mostly ordinary office work. They're searching for information, drafting emails, and summarizing documents. That creates an interesting workplace problem.
4:15
Imagine two employees doing essentially the same job. One pays twenty dollars, fifty dollars, or perhaps a hundred dollars a month for advanced AI tools and becomes substantially more productive. The other doesn't.
4:25
Access to software starts functioning almost like access to better equipment.
4:29
Companies may eventually decide that providing approved AI tools is simply part of providing employees with the resources required to do their jobs. There is also a security issue.
4:38
If employees independently subscribe to AI services, companies have less control over what information gets uploaded and which models employees use, and where potentially sensitive data ends up.
4:48
So the next stage of workplace AI adoption may be less about convincing employees to use AI. Employees are already doing that. It may be about employers finally catching up with them.
4:58
Finally, something considerably farther from home. Scientists say they've detected radio waves coming directly from a planet outside our solar system for the first time.
5:05
The planet is Beta Pictoris b, a gas giant about sixty-three light years from Earth. And before anyone starts preparing for first contact, researchers don't think the signal came from aliens.
5:15
They believe it was produced by auroras generated as charged particles interact with the planet's extraordinarily powerful magnetic field.
5:22
It's essentially the same basic phenomenon that creates the northern lights on Earth, except on a vastly larger scale.
5:28
Scientists estimate the planet's magnetic field could be roughly three hundred times stronger than Jupiter's. Why does that matter?
5:34
When scientists search for potentially habitable worlds, they usually focus heavily on whether a planet lies within the right temperature range for liquid water. But temperature isn't enough.
5:43
A planet also needs to maintain an atmosphere while being bombarded by radiation and particles from its star. A strong magnetic field can provide some of that protection.
5:51
Beta Pictoris b itself isn't considered another Earth, but detecting its magnetic field remotely could give astronomers another way to evaluate distant planets.
6:00
Instead of asking only whether a planet is the right distance from its star, scientists may eventually be able to ask another important question. Does it have the protection necessary for life to survive there?
6:10
The research hasn't yet been peer-reviewed, so the finding remains preliminary. But if it holds up, radio emissions could become another tool astronomers use to decide which distant worlds deserve a closer look.
6:21
Those are the stories we're watching. The thread running through today's news is technology moving faster than the institutions around it. Employees are adopting AI before their employers establish policies for it.
6:32
AI companies are releasing increasingly capable systems while regulators determine how existing laws apply to them. And scientists are developing new ways to examine worlds that until recently we could barely detect.
6:45
The technology is already here. Now everyone else has to figure out what to do with it.
6:48
In other news, new gene-edited bananas designed to resist browning just cleared a major UK regulatory hurdle and could, you know, help prevent some of the roughly twenty percent of banana yields currently lost to browning.
6:59
Researchers found that humans' reaction time was forty-one milliseconds faster while exhaling than while inhaling, suggesting the link between the brain and lungs is deeper than once thought.
7:09
The Trump administration released an AI chatbot to help Americans handle most government tasks like passport renewal or Medicare enrollment through a single conversational website.
7:19
Paleontologists have discovered an anatomically bizarre dinosaur with three-foot claws and seventy-seven tightly packed teeth that looked terrifying but was most likely vegetarian.
7:30
MIT engineers have built a paper-thin robot powered by living muscle cells, allowing it to swim, turn, and navigate a watery maze simply by following flashes of light. That's it for this episode of Next Gen News.
7:42
We'll keep watching what changes, what matters, and what you can safely ignore.
